Production Background
The action takes place in the fictional town of Athens and the
surrounding pine forest during the early settlement days of Idaho. Like all good
settlements, Athens has its share of saloons. The play opens in the Palace Saloon which is
owned by Duke Theseus. To serve the local working men (trappers, traders, fishermen,
etc.), Theseus employs a variety of 'working women'. These women are looked after by the
beautiful and voluptuous Philostrate, Mistress of the Revels. In the surrounding pine
forest live the mythical creatures of the Nez Perce Coyote tales. The mischievous Puck
(Coyote) enjoys playing tricks on the other animals of the forest and on the inhabitants
of Athens.
